Adobe might end the development of Flash Player for mobile devices -- Updated
After eliminating 750 full-time positions in attempts to reposition itself as a leader in digital media and marketing. A rumor from ZDNet suggests that the changes could go even further and Adobe might be stopping the development of Flash Player on mobile devices entirely.
According to ZDNet that sources close to Adobe that have been briefed on the company’s future development plans have revealed this forthcoming announcement:
"Our future work with Flash on mobile devices will be focused on enabling Flash developers to package native apps with Adobe AIR for all the major app stores. We will no longer adapt Flash Player for mobile devices to new browser, OS version or device configurations. Some of our source code licensees may opt to continue working on and releasing their own implementations. We will continue to support the current Android and PlayBook configurations with critical bug fixes and security updates."
If this rumor is true then the company might be giving up its development on Flash Player for browsers on mobile, and now focusing their development efforts on applications for mobile, expressive content on the desktop, and increasing their investments in HTML5 in general. While existing platforms like Android will be receiving only security updates in the future.
Update: Adobe just confirmed that they will no longer continue to develop Flash Player in the browser to work with new mobile device configurations (chipset, browser, OS version, etc.), but they will continue to provide critical bug fixes and security updates for existing device configurations.
