Smart supports PhilPop Music Festival 2012
Subscribers of mobile phone leader Smart Communications, Inc. (Smart) will have a say in selecting the next big local pop music hit and next great Filipino songwriter in the forthcoming Philippine Pop Music Festival on July 14.
Launched last February, the music fest is a songwriting competition that aims to highlight the contributions of songwriters and composers to the Filipino music industry. Part of the contest is the People’s Choice Award that will be selected by Smart subscribers voting via text messaging.
"We are happy to be a part of the Music Festival. Smart has been promoting popular music, including original Philippine compositions, for many years,” said Emmanuel Lorenzana, who heads the Wireless Consumer Division of Smart, which is co-presenting the festival.
"From our traditional services such as ringtones and caller ringtunes, to full-track music downloads, Smart provides Filipino and foreign artists and composers a new legitimate channel for making their music accessible to a wider audience. As a result, Smart is now one of the largest retailers of music in the country,” he added.
Organized by the PhilPop Music Fest Foundation, the Festival has collected a record-breaking 3,000 song entries from Filipino amateur and professional composers in the Philippines and abroad.
Through a stringent screening and judging process supervised by Festival executive director Ryan Cayabyab, the initial long list of entries has been pruned down to the Top 14 finalists.
The board of judges is composed of musical executive producers, composers, singers, musicians and writers.
The Top 14 will compete for the top prize of 1 million pesos. The first runner-up will receive P500,000, the second runner-up will receive P250,000, and the rest will receive P50,000.
The song with the highest number of text votes will be given the People's Choice Award and the winning prize of P200,000.
To give Smart subscribers the opportunity to choose their favorite entry, they can listen to the shortened version of the songs via www.philpop.com.ph, as well as on the radio, in partner establishments, and via media partners such as TV5.
All winners of the First Philippine Popular Music Festival will be announced on July 14, 2012 at the PICC Plenary Hall.
In partnership with other major companies like Maynilad Water, MERALCO, PLDT, Sun Cellular, TV5 and the PICC, Smart hopes to help revive public interest and support for original Filipino music.
"We Filipinos have music in our blood. We must support and take pride in the talent and artistry of Filipino songwriters and composers," said Lorenzana.
"Bringing Filipino music closer to our subscribers is one of the ways by which we encourage people to ‘live more’," ended Lorenzana.
