SmartNet updated. Still awesome, still free
Love SmartNet? Then mark your calendars because on June 7, 2012 the latest version of this ground-breaking app will be available on Google Play. More details after the jump.
SmartNet 7.5 comes with a bevy of fun features that promise to make your smartphone even more enjoyable.
Aptly headlining the list of goodies is “Headlines.” More than just an aggregator, Headlines collects news and arranges them to look and read like a magazine. You can include feeds from your favorite entertainment, fashion, sports, technology, and deals websites and you can even read the full story simply by clicking on the tile.
Speaking of deals websites, Smart has partnered with Ensogo Philippines, the country’s largest deal of the day site to alert SmartNet users of the latest must-haves and must-dos around town. Simply click on the Ensogo tile and you could be on your way to buying your next gadget or availing of a relaxing spa treatment.
Next, there’s the beefed-up list of “Emojis” emoticons, which you can use to make your posts look more fun. With over 100 fun faces to choose from, you can better express your emotions whether you’re feeling happy, sad, or I-don’t-ever-want-to-see-you-ever-again-but-call-me-still-later-maybe-ish?
Swiping between your Facebook, Twitter, and SmartNet feeds is now also possible. Simply slide your finger to the left or to the right of the screen to view individual feed columns—swipe all the way to the left to view the combined feed.
Finally, a subscription menu for the most popular prepaid packages has been included. Smart Prepaid users can avail of their favorite prepaid variants by simply picking and clicking. Now, you can pick and compare the best call, text, or data packages for your buck without memorizing keywords and numbers!
A number of tweaks have also made SmartNet faster and more stable according to according to Smart Head of Products Gio Bacareza. With close to 300,000 SmartNet users— a threefold increase from juat last February—, however, his team feels the need to step up their game.
“We’re catering to users who, according to our data, are three times more likely to pay for Mobile Internet use outside of the SmartNet ecosystem,” he said. “They either click on links their Twitter contacts recommended or view photos and videos posted on Facebook.”
With such a tech-savvy user base, Bacareza reveals that the next version of SmartNet will boast of a zippier registration process, a friend finder app, and an achievements feature similar to Foursquare’s “badges” or accomplishments system.
He adds that the Windows Mobile and iOS versions of SmartNet have also been submitted for approval to the Windows MarketPlace and to the Apple Store, respectively, thus potentially expanding the service’s reach within the next few weeks.
“Be prepared to be wowed as we continue to improve on SmartNet,” Bacareza said. “And the best part of it all is that all these improvements can be enjoyed for free only on the country’s largest network,” he ended.
