A joint entrapment operation conducted by police and security personnel of Globe Telecom led to the arrest of a computer and cellphone technician in Bulacan for selling hacked WIMAX broadband modems. Arrested was Francis Camangin, 22 years-old and a resident of Blk. 1 lot 44 Sitio Gitna, Sto. Cristo in San Jose Del Monte, Bulacan. More details after the jump.
Charges for violation of Republic Act 8484, which is the Access Devices Regulations Act and Presidential Decree 1612, were filed against Camangin, who uses the alias Ashley Limpan in his Facebook account. Camangin is alleged to be both a hacker and a seller of WIMAX broadband modems.
According to lawyer Froilan Castelo, Head of Globe Corporate, Legal Services Group, "the modus operandi has been to pull-out WIMAX modems from legitimate subscribers on pretext of an upgrade. The modems are then reconfigured and sold at a one-time cost. Unwitting individuals are then offered an internet connection without monthly bill payments. In most instances, the hacked modems are fraudulently sold at a price ranging between PHP2,500 to PHP3,500."
Castelo emphasized that violation of RA 8484 and PD 1612 could entails a fine of PHP24,000 and an imprisonment of up to 6 years, noting that majority of the individuals involved in the illegal operation are computer or cellphone technicians who have the knowhow to reconfigure the WIMAX modems for an illegal activity.
