Iloilo City 76th Charter Day Celebration Schedule of Activities and Events!
Iloilo City is celebrating its 76th Charter Day on August 25, 2013. This year’s celebration will put emphasis on the city’s Vision 20-20 and Mayor Jed Patrick Mabilog’s one cohesive effort on “Juan Vision, Juan Direction and Juan Action” by putting all city government services under one focus. To commemorate this historic event the city government has lined up various events starting next week, August 14. Check out the Schedule of Activities after the jump.
Activities until August 25 include job fair, food festival, oratorical and extemporaneous contests, quiz bee, dance sports, recognition and awards, civic parade, Mayor's Ball, medical missions, river clean-up, search for Mr. and Ms. Iloilo City, bloodletting, arts and culture programs, city-wide sale, exhibits, fun run, essay-writing, bands concerts and a lot more.
“This is a celebration of the accomplishments our city has achieved, how we have endeavored to turn the lessons of the past into worthwhile initiatives that make us all proud to be Ilonggos,” Mayor Jed Patrick E. Mabilog said.
Iloilo, as a chartered city, was formally inaugurated on August 25, 1937 after the surrounding municipalities of La Paz, Mandurriao, Molo and Arevalo were merged with the progressive town of Iloilo on July 16, 1937, by virtue of Commonwealth Act No.158.
It was initially elevated into a city by the Queen Regent of Spain in October 1889 and a city government was established the following year. However, all cities with the exception of Manila, were downgraded into towns when the Americans colonized the Philippines.
