Globe Telecom Puts Up Libreng Tawag Station in Zamboanga City (Updated)
Globe Telecom set up a Libreng Tawag station in Zamboanga City on September 10 in response to the clashes that swept four barangays in the city on September 9. The Libreng Tawag station is located at the Joaquin F. Enriquez Memorial Sports Complex, an evacuation center in Barangay San Jose Cawa-Cawa currently housing 5,000 people or 800 families.
Globe Telecom will be setting up four more Libreng Tawag stations over the next week in various evacuation centers and mobile hospitals, starting tomorrow at the Western Mindanao State University gym, where patients of Zamboanga General Hospital are temporarily evacuated.
Through these stations, evacuees can text and make local calls to all networks, as well as international calls, all for free. OIC for Globe Corporate Social Responsibility Fernando Esguerra says, “We are closely monitoring the situation in Zamboanga to determine other areas that need immediate assistance.”
Update: (09/13/13) Globe has just announced that they have pulled out in some of the areas due to the increasing tension between the government and the MNLF. Globe's security and sales teams are also assessing the situation if it is still safe for their employees to continue offering the above mentioned services.
