10 Globe cable theft suspects arrested


Police authorities arrested a total of ten suspects involved in Globe cable theft last February amid continuing efforts of the telecommunications provider to curb such illegal activities. More details after the jump.

The first one to be arrested was Reynaldo Raya who was apprehended on February 3 while in the act of cutting Globe cable wires in Hagnaya, San Remegio in Cebu. Police recovered copper wires and illegal drugs from the suspect. The next day, police arrested Rodolfo Pianar who was also caught in the act of cutting Globe cable wires in Baranggay Cogon, Bago City, Cebu. Police also recovered Globe copper wires and a chain hack saw from the suspect.

Last February 13, police arrested Ramie Matuguina, Ryan Tumampo and Ronaldo Jaca, who were likewise arrested while in the act of cutting Globe cable wires in Baybay City, Leyte. Responding to a police intelligence report, police personnel on February 20 arrested Randy Cobico, Joel Gomez and Roel Inghog who were caught in the act of cutting Globe cable wires along Salana St., Merida, Leyte.

The next day, police arrested Lemar Maru and Jeffrey Maru in response to a cable cut alarm in Madrilejos Island, Cebu. Admitting they were responsible for the series of cable cutting incidents in the area, the suspects, who were minors, were immediately turned over to the Department of Social Welfare and Development.

"The arrests were an offshoot of the company's efforts to step up its drive versus cable theft. Rest assured that Globe will continue to work closely with police authorities in its crackdown against cable theft. The company is fully aware that such illegal activity causes disruption of communication services and we will continue to intensify our efforts to minimize, if not to totally eradicate, cable theft," said Ronald Uychutin, Globe Director for Security and Anti-Fraud and Investigation.

According to Uychutin, appropriate criminal cases were filed against the suspects. Amid intensified campaign against cable theft, police in close coordination with Globe security personnel, arrested 25 suspects involved in such illegal activities in January. Recently, two separate cases of theft involving Globe cables in Bais City, Negros Oriental, were resolved in favor of the telecommunications provider, resulting in the conviction of 5 persons, who were all sentenced to a penalty of 6 years of imprisonment.
