Globe enhances network resiliency, protection systems
Globe Telecom has put in place mechanisms and programs that enhanced the company’s network resiliency and protection system to further ensure its customers have access to voice, SMS and data services even during emergencies such as when a disaster strikes.
Specifically, the network transformation project redesigned the company’s wireless network and strengthened its core by establishing system and site redundancy, Globe Chief Technical Adviser Robert Tan said. “The redundancy initiative involved installation of multiple equipment, per core site, to establish traffic balancing and hardware redundancy, thus ensuring minimal service disruption in the event of an equipment failure,” Tan said.
In a bid to further advance its network resiliency, the telecommunication provider also stepped up the design of company infrastructure in typhoon-stricken areas by introducing the use of an innovative tower solution that accelerate service restoration. The company is also expanding the deployment of cellular on wheels and lego solution to enable mobile services in typhoon-prone areas. Cell on wheels are mobile cell sites that provide expanded cellular network coverage and capacity during special events or during times of emergencies.
“Our network resiliency program is a very important component of our network transformation initiative, recognizing that telecommunication services becomes more essential during times of emergency. Needless to say, the company’s network resiliency program will be under constant review to ensure our readiness to provide our customers’ access to our voice, SMS and data network at times they need these services the most,” Tan added.
Strengthening the company’s resiliency system forms part of the Globe Telecom’s transformation initiative. So far, such initiative delivered the country’s most modernized telecommunications infrastructure in the Philippines and enabled Globe to become the first telecommunications company in the Philippines to achieve 100% 3G coverage for its entire network. The entire Globe network would also be fully equipped with the more advanced 4G HSPA+ technology, which would further boost network capacity and performance, by the end of the third quarter.
Globe is the first telecommunications provider in the Philippines to secure an enterprise-wide certification of compliance for business continuity, specifically for meeting the standards set under ISO 22301:2012. The certification attests to the company’s readiness to provide delivery of voice, SMS, data products, internet and data center related activities, through its mobile and fixed line networks to its domestic and international customers even during emergencies. The certificate was issued by the British Standards Institute and approved by the United Kingdom Accreditation Services. Compliance with ISO 22301:2012 ensures plans are in place to reduce impact and frequency of business disruptions.
