vivo Y28 Unboxing and First Impression

On June 29, 2024, vivo launched the vivo Y28, the latest addition to its entry-level Y Series lineup.

The vivo Y28 offers luxury, functionality, and a range of features in one device, making it stand out in a competitive market. Equipped with a large 6,000mAh battery, the largest in its price category, the phone also introduces the Dynamic Light feature, a first in its price range. This feature syncs with music, call and message notifications, and serves as a selfie countdown.

I was lucky to get my hands on one, and I'm excited to share my unboxing experience and initial impressions of the device. Let's start with the unboxing.

Unboxing the vivo Y28

The vivo Y28 comes in a white box with the Y28 branding on the front. The back portion contains details such as the three important features of the vivo Y28, as well as the model number, IMEI number, serial number, RAM, storage, and color.

Inside the Box and Accessories

After opening the lid of the box, you will find the vivo Y28 smartphone wrapped in white matte plastic. I will set aside the device for now and see what else we got in the box.

Inside are the following: a SIM card ejector tool, a quick start guide, important information (including the warranty card), a 44W FlashCharge power adapter, a USB type-C to USB-A charging cable, and a silicone case. Please note that the vivo Y28 does not come with headphones, so you will need to provide your own.

After unboxing, let us now take a look at the physical overview and my first impression of the device.

Design and Walk Around

The vivo Y28 features a sleek and lightweight design that embodies luxury. One notable design feature is its 3D diamond pattern camera module, inspired by watch design elegance. It is available in two colors: Agate Green and Gleaming Orange, and mine is in the latter color, which is reminiscent of a warm sunrise.

Apart from its design, the Y28 is also practical. The back panel is equipped with anti-fingerprint technology to keep the phone clear and clean. However, the plastic frame with a metallic high-gloss finish tends to attract fingerprints. In terms of dimensions, the Gleaming Orange variant is 8.09mm thick and weighs 199 grams.

The vivo Y28 boasts a 6.68-inch HD+ (1608 × 720) IPS display with a 90Hz refresh rate. It has a centered hole-punch camera at the top, along with an earpiece that also functions as a speaker discreetly positioned above the display. Additionally, the phone comes with a pre-installed screen protector.

On the back, the dual camera system comprises a 50MP main camera and a 2MP depth sensor, along with an LED flash. It also features vivo’s Dynamic Light, which resembles a circular LED light.

On the left side, there is a card tray with a 2-card slot for one nano-SIM card and either another nano-SIM or a microSD card for expandable storage up to 1TB.

On the right side, you'll find the standard volume rocker button and a side-mounted fingerprint sensor embedded in the power button.

At the bottom of the phone, you can find the USB Type-C charging port, a downward-firing speaker, a microphone, and a 3.5mm audio jack.

Hardware

The vivo Y28 is equipped with a MediaTek Helio G85 processor, which is built on a 12nm production process. It includes two Cortex-A75 cores, six Cortex-A55 cores, and a Mali-G52 MC2 GPU.

The phone comes with 8GB of RAM, which can be expanded up to 16GB using the phone’s storage. It will be available in two storage variants: 128GB and 256GB. The phone runs on Funtouch OS 14 based on Android 14, and it is IP64 water-resistant and dust-resistant.

Cameras

The phone features a dual-camera system with a 50MP primary camera and is paired with a 2MP depth sensor. It also has an 8MP in-display selfie camera.
