PLDT, Smart, West Visayas State University launch “Tuon Ta” Hiligaynon Language App

PLDT Inc. and Smart Communications, Inc. supported West Visayas State University's (WVSU) development and launching of "Tuon Ta" (Let’s Learn), an innovative app designed to preserve and promote the Hiligaynon language.

"Our partnership with academic institutions like WVSU is central to our mission of using technology to preserve Filipino cultural heritage," said Marylou Gocotano, Head of PLDT and Smart Public Engagement Group Visayas. "Through 'Tuon Ta,' we're enabling younger generations to connect with their roots while demonstrating how digital innovation can introduce an engaging way of learning the beautiful language, Hiligaynon."

This university-led initiative showcases the exceptional talent and dedication of WVSU students from Education, IT, and Communication departments, demonstrating how their interdisciplinary collaboration has created a meaningful educational tool that makes language learning both accessible and engaging.

Dr. Ma. Asuncion Christine Dequilla, Vice President for Academic Affairs at West Visayas State University, emphasized the collaborative nature of the project while acknowledging their telco partner, PLDT and Smart. Our partnership has been invaluable in transforming ideas into tangible tools that will touch the lives of many learners."

The app makes learning Hiligaynon fun by adding in songs, short stories, games, and poems in Hiligaynon. The "Tuon Ta" app marks the 11th mother-tongue based application developed under PLDT and Smart's #LearnSmart advocacy, encouraging the use of digital technology to enhance learning.

The development of the “Tuon Ta” app aligns with PLDT and Smart's overall commitment to UNSDG Goals No. 4 on Quality Education and 11 on Sustainable Cities and Communities. By helping preserve local languages through digital platforms, the group is ensuring cultural sustainability while providing innovative educational tools that reach more learners across the Philippines.
